How To Find The Right Path In Life

If you are a graduate or you are beginning a new chapter in your life…this post is for you.

You’ve spent the majority of your life up to this point, preparing for what is about to take place; and let me say, you have a golden opportunity. You have an opportunity to find the right path in life.

At this point in your life, the sky really is the limit. There are such good experiences and positive things that are ahead of you. Many would say that you can do anything with your life you want to do. In many ways, graduation is only the beginning of your future. In fact, there are so many people who would love to be in your position and have a chance to do things differently than what they’ve done.

In all the excitement of starting a brand new chapter in your life, don’t accidentally get so caught up in the moment that you lose focus. Life is often like reading a book. If you are a reader, you understand how easy it is to get caught up in the first chapter.

Admittedly, the first chapter of any book is literally there to draw you in. The first chapter lays the groundwork for what comes next. The first chapter introduces the characters, the plot, and the complication.

If you have chosen a good book, the first chapter is an easy read; it causes you to get into the story, making you wind your way along the path each character chooses.

In many ways, your life and mine is just like a book; the only difference is we are the characters.

Your story will wind its way along the path of life either by accident or by design. You can choose the amount of input you will have in writing the story of your life or you can simply leave things to chance.

Many of you have already made decisions that will affect your life for years to come. You have plans and career paths, dreams, hopes, and desires. All of these things are good, and you have life in front of you with the ability to write a great story.

What’s about to take place only marks the beginning of the first chapter. Until now, your life has been the preface to something with amazing possibility. So, as the first chapter begins, don’t get so lost in it that you fail to find the right path.

The right path will make or break the story of your life.

The right path will make or break the story of your life.

Let me say that one more time, because it is an important statement…

The right path will make or break the story of your life.

At the outset of this post, I want to make three things very clear:

  • God has the right path for your life.
  • He knows the right path.
  • He created the right path for your life.

The right path is found through following one person…Jesus.

Jesus is THE path to God. There are not many ways; there is ONE way.

Although there is just one path to God, there are many paths that lead where God wants you to go; but the truth of this idea does not mean every path is easiest or best.

There really is a right path for your life; and if you take it, you will experience a life greater than you could hope for.

Many people can attest to the fact that, although their life ended up in the place God wanted it to be, and although their life is in a good place now, the road to now could have been much smoother, better, and more enjoyable if they would have made different decisions in their first chapter.

Knowing Jesus is the first step to writing a great life story. Your story will not end good without him; but the second step to writing a great life story is walking down the right path, beginning in the first chapter.

The Bible speaks to us about our path…

Psalm 5:8 NLTse

8 Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow.

Knowing Jesus is the first step to writing a great life story.-2

Simply put, God wants what is best for you, and the enemy, the devil, wants you to fail.

The key to keep from failing is walking on the right path. When you step off the right path, there are all sorts of stumbling blocks just waiting to trip you up.

Now, there are so many things I would like to speak about if we could, but I will only touch on three.

These three enemies are waiting to attack your life as soon as you step off the right path.

The first enemy is time.

Now, before we talk about why time is an enemy, first let me say that, time CAN be leveraged as a tool.

Using time the right way makes it a tool you can use to accomplish your dreams; but used the wrong way, time will derail your progress, and stop you in your tracks.

Time is an enemy that just keeps on coming. It literally never stops. Time will not necessarily keep you from reaching the place of God’s blessing for your life, but time CAN delay your destiny for YEARS if you step off the right path.

Here’s what I mean…

The other day, my family went for a drive. It was a beautiful afternoon and we decided to get out, roll down our windows, and just enjoy the breeze.

Since we felt a little adventurous, we left the road that we knew and went exploring. Soon we came to a place that we were unfamiliar with. I looked at my phone and checked the GPS and found we had NO SERVICE.

In this day and time, you think every place has service, but not every place does.

It was then that I really wanted a map…you know, one of those things they print on actual paper!

Since I didn’t have one, we just kept on driving, in the wrong direction, looking for something familiar to use as a landmark.

Now, we found our way. We made it back. But a little trip off the right road took us much much longer than it should have taken.

That’s the thing with time…it holds you up longer than you want to stay. It keeps you running in circles when you really want to move forward.

Don’t get so caught up in this first chapter of life that you lose track of time and waste valuable years.

The second enemy is hurt.

You’re probably familiar with this enemy already. Sometimes life hurts us. Sometimes people hurt us. Sometimes friends hurt us.

The thing about hurt that wounds us so deeply is that it often comes unexpectedly. When a trusted friend or family member is the one causing you hurt, it catches you off guard. The pain can run deep.

Now, to be clear, just because someone hurts you, does not mean that you have to step off the right path. You can choose to forgive.

The way this enemy strikes is through helping you to create an unforgiving spirit. In other words, someone hurts you and you hold on to the hurt. Listen, one of the greatest lessons I’ve ever had to learn was to forgive others.

Forgiving people in life who hurt you, really has NOTHING to do with them, but EVERYTHING to do with YOU.

They may not reciprocate the forgiveness, they may not feel like you have forgiven them, they may not feel like you have done enough, but you choose to forgive them anyway. Why? Because when you forgive someone, even if they still try to hurt you, it breaks their power to over your life. Plus, forgiveness is an internal action on your part. Sometimes it is accompanied with necessary actions like saying, “I’m sorry,” or “forgive me too,” but often, others won’t accept the simple acts of forgiveness you try to give. Just realize that your forgiveness to them is a choice you make in your heart, you are letting go of a debt they owe you…nothing more, nothing less.

Through your life you will have countless opportunities to hold on to hurt and allow an unforgiving spirit to conquer you, but don’t. The quicker you forgive, the quicker God can get back to work, leading you towards his good plan for your life.

The third enemy you will face is self-dependence.

Your mind will tell you, “you don’t need anyone. You can make on your own.” The truth is, thoughts like that are a lie. You were never designed to make it through life on your own.

You and I are designed to rely on God.

We are created with a need for God. Even if you don’t feel the need for him at the moment, it is still there. You will reach a moment in your life that brings you to a cross-roads. In that moment, you will have to choose to rely only on yourself, or to accept the help that only God can provide.

Now, no one wants to walk through life depending on a crutch, but God is not a crutch. A crutch in a cold, inanimate object. God, on the other hand is a friend.

He is someone you can lean on, not just something.

God is a friend that has already walked the path in front of you and he knows the way. He will help you make the right choices and follow the right path.

The right path will make or break the story of your life.

THE path to God is Jesus.

So what is the key to finding the right path?

The scripture we read earlier says it all…

Psalm 5:8 NLTse

8 Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. Make your way plain for me to follow.

To find the right path for your life, you must let God lead you. It is a choice.

The choice is simple, but not always easy.

Jesus has to be in control of your life.

When You put Jesus in control of your life, it’s as if you have placed him in front of you. You can see him…so you can follow him.

No one can lead you if you’re the one in front.

For Jesus to lead you, you have to take a step back and put him in front.

The way you do that is simple:

  • You ask Jesus to forgive your sin.
  • You ask Jesus to take control of your life.
  • You believe in your heart that he is your Lord, the one that God raised from the dead.

So, as you begin a new chapter of your life, who will be in charge? Who will take the lead? Will you remain on the right path? It is a choice.
